Hot summer weather calls for icy cold treats and Icy Bar delivers! Chinese Bites invited me and a bunch of other foodies to enjoy delicious cold desserts at Icy Bar on Kingsway and Boundary. The place is normally closed on Tuesday but opened just for us. They serve icy desserts as well as drinks, and a variety of Taiwanese and Asian sweets, toasts, pancakes, and a few savory items.

We started with two different bowls of the Traditional Eight Mix Icy (photo above). The toppings are all customizable so you can pick and choose your favourites. Icy Bar also provides a bottle of condensed milk for you to add on to your icy if it is not sweet enough.

I loved the Mango Ice Cream Mochi Icy. Mango mango mango! I think the fresh fruit ice bowls are usually the best, especially when the fruits are in season. The yummy mochi are also made from scratch!

Strawberry Mango Ice Cream Icy

Each one of us got to order a milkshake drink. I chose the durian milkshake much to the dismay of my neighbour. Hahah! It had a good strong smell (some may debate whether it is actually a "good" smell or not) but I thought it wasn't sweet enough. Eating some of the icy makes the drink tasteless. Maybe it was because the durian wasn't very ripe.

Icy Bar also has other non-icy things on their menu. This is their Pancake series - a dessert filled with whipping cream and fillings such as strawberry, mango, durian, and taro. These are made fresh every day.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they served tea eggs at Icy Bar. I had ordered one at the Kingsway/Dumfries location before and it was sort of bland. Here, it was salty and not too much of a tea flavour but I still liked it. I guess I'm spoiled by the ones my mom makes. =P

This Chocolate Honey Toast was so good!

Plant Puddings are interesting. They are very cute and come in five different flavours: Original, Durian, Mango, Oreo and Tiramisu. I tried the Oreo one and I loved it! It almost had a coffee flavour to it.

Besides ice bowls, Icy Bar also serves flavoured shaved ice, which I had at the Kingsway/King Ed location. If you are looking to beat the heat, Icy Bar is a pretty good choice. They have a total of five locations around the lower mainland.

Mango Yummy started at the Richmond Night Market and it was a stall I never failed to visit when I was there. To my delight, they recently opened a brick and mortar store on No.3 Road in Richmond! I've visited them three times already! I'm always in the mood for mango!

The shop is a very popular spot, often with line-ups that end up outside. They also open until 11pm or midnight.

There is very little seating, grab a spot if you can or just take your order to go.

They obviously have an expanded menu than the one they have at the night market.

They also sell different flavours of mochi. Even a durian flavoured one!

Signature Mango Sago & Grapefruit - $6

I usually order their specialty - Mango Sago & Grapefruit. It's the best!

Signature Mango Shaved Ice - $7

Their shaved ice is not too shabby either.

Sometimes the mango they use isn't that ripe and is sour. That's the only gripe I have about them. It wasn't too bad the one time I had the sour mangos. I just mixed them into the drink. It is usually sweet enough.

Will definitely be back again!

Glenburn Soda was a place I've always wanted to go to. It's a cool 50s-style soda pop shoppe and photos of their ice creams and sundaes were so enticing! So finally, K and I planned a trip there last Sunday and took our parents along. It's funny because they commented on how nowadays the younger generation likes olden day things while the older generation likes more modern things. lol

Glenburn didn't open until 2pm on Sunday so we had lunch next door to wait. We came back at 2:15pm and the place was packed already!

There were so many options...I'll definitely have to come back again to try other things!

It's always time for ice cream at Glenburn. =D

Glenburn uses local ingredients, such as Birchwood Dairy and Avalon Dairy, to make their desserts and they also buy from other local businesses!

The parents thought the sundaes were too big for them so chose just to get a ice cream cone.

Dad had vanilla while mom tried the coffee crunch.

"I went all hot and cold"

It was still the hot chocolate festival so I decided to get Glenburn's version. It came with a cute vanilla ice cream cone on the rim of the cup!

"Black Out"

K tried "Black Out," a Glenburn original. It's chocolate syrup with chocolate ice cream topped chocolate whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, and a chocolate wafer. Chocolate overload! It was very good though!


They also sell cool vintage looking sodas and candies.


I really enjoyed our excursion to Glenburn and will be back in the future!

Earnest Ice Cream had been around for a while now and I kept hearing lots of good things about them. They started off with a little cart and were so successful, they opened a brick and mortar store on Fraser. I visited them with M.N. and W.W. a couple weeks back. It was a Friday night, 9:30pm and the line was still out the door! It took us about 10 minutes finally reach the counter. They serve ice cream and coffee. $5 for a single scoop which you can have in a waffle cone or in a cup or $7 for a double scoop. I wanted to try the Earl Grey and Whisky Hazelnut. Man, was it delicious! Taste explosion! I especially loved the whisky hazelnut. The only mistake that I made was that I should have ordered that first, then the Earl Grey, because it had a milder taste. The whisky hazelnut flavour overwhelmed the earl grey.

So was it worth the hype? Yes, yes, it was.
