Walk in Strathcona - Oppenheimer Park. Meet on the park side of the field house on Powell, between Jackson and Dunlevy. Presented by arborist David Tracey. David is executive director of Tree City, a non-profit organization "helping people and trees grow together". David also leads workshops on organic fruit tree selection and care. This park is the site of "Legacy Sakura", trees planted in 1977 to commemorate the centennial of the first generation of Japanese who came to settle in Canada. The walk will include the history of the trees and many other points of interest within a six block circumference of the park.

Billy Elliot is based on Academy Award nominated 2000 film of the same title, set in during one of the darkest times in British history - the 1984 miner’s strike. It is about a young boy from a small mining town, with no talent in boxing, but instead finds himself extraordinary gifted in ballet dancing. Dance is not something the working-class men of a mining town does so Billy's chain-smoking dance teacher helps him nurture his talent in secret. Meanwhile, the strike is getting on the community's nerves and the tension threatens to tear Billy's family apart when they find out about his secret. Billy will have to prove his passion for dancing and inspire his family and the whole community to help him achieve the ultimate goal - entrance to the prestigious Royal Ballet School.


The musical started off a little slow but quickly warmed up; drawing a parallel, Billy's dancing was unsure and hesitant at first but found his solid footing by the time his audition scene came up. Billy's song and dance solo "Electricity" was just that - electrifying and was a delight and joy to watch the young actor's movements across the stage.

The cast was full of talented actors but it was definitely Drew Minard, one of four actors who play Billy, who stole the show. Amazing, considering the actor is only what 12 or 13? Other notable characters were Mrs. Wilkinson, Billy's dance teacher, played by Janet Dickinson and Michael, Billy's queer friend, played by Jake Kitchin. Both had their own musical numbers - "Shine" and "Expressing Yourself" respectively, which were fun and colourful tunes that got the musical going due to the strong performances of the actors.

The dialogue was slightly hard to follow due to the accents, however it didn't detract from the experience. Parents with young children should be aware that there is some strong language and cursing in the musical but no more than in the movie.

It is a lot more funnier than the movie it is based on, considering the serious and depressing tone of the film but it works in live theatre. What we have here was a funny, heart-felt and engaging story set to lively and uplifting music. While all the musical numbers were a joy to listen to (music by none other than Elton John and lyrics by Lee Hall), the strongest ones I felt were the loud and angry ones - "Solidarity", "Angry Dance" and "Electricity". But even more so than the music, Billy's dancing scenes were my personal favourites, like Billy says  "there are not words to describe it, it's just a feeling" - a strong feeling indeed.

The musical is an amazing, energetic and feel-good show that I really enjoyed as did the rest of the audience - the night ended with a standing ovation. Go see it, it will not disappoint!

Canstruction Vancouver is an annual exhibit of amazing sculptures made entirely of canned food and a competition to raise money for the Vancouver Food Bank. All the cans used in the structures are donated to the Vancouver Food Bank after the competition is over. This year's theme was “Arts and Animation” and you can see the finished canstructions in the Four Seasons Hotel, the Pacific Center Rotunda and the HSBC Pendulum Gallery. The exhibit only last until April 3rd so go see these amazing structures before they are gone! Open 10 am – 5pm daily.

Here are some of my favourites:

"Penguins OF Madagascar on vaCANtion" is made with 3800 cans by SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts and CircusWest Performing Arts Society. It won the Best School award.

 "CANsformers, cans in disguise" is made by New Westminster Secondary School with 5500 cans and won the CAN-do Award.


I think "The Philanthropic Grouch" has to be my favourite! It is made with 6100 cans by Edith Cavell Elementary School, Parallel Group OPerations and the Vancouver SUN and won the Landscape Architect's Award!

Tuna To-Toro and his Can-munity Garden

Tuna To-Toro was definitely the crowd's favourite. It is made with 4056 cans by Ausenco Engineering and Canada Inc. It also won the Jurers' Favourite award!

The Art of Mickey Mouse made of cans! This canstruction won Hourable Mention as well as Best Use of Theme.

 This salmon is found upstairs next to YEW restaurant. It won Best Use of Labels award. Very nice indeed!

Leonidas held their 100th year anniversary at the Vancouver waterfront location this past weekend and they invited everyone to celebrate with them in a Night of Temptation and Indulgence! With over 1400 sales outlets over the globe, selling fine Belgium chocolate, Leonidas has every reason to celebrate!

 

In addition to chocolates, they also serve a variety of drinks and desserts.

Like these delicious locally sourced macrons. Later in the night, there was a macron tasting and I tried the marshmallow and truffle flavour. 


They sell a LOT of chocolate. A LOT!

Anything you want!




The party started at 6pm and the store filled up to capacity as the night went on. No one can resist the call of chocolate!

Leonidas set up a chocolate fondue fountain at the front with fruits, cream puffs (YUM!), waffles, peanut butter filled prezels for dipping.

Wine was flowing, too, with choice of red or white.

K and I don't really drink so the Leonida staff were nice enough to give us a choice of hot chocolate instead! They sell white, milk, 52% dark or 72% dark hot chocolate drinks.

We both tried the milk hot chocolate and it was divine! Very smooth and delicious. I want to try the other ones as well!

Appies went around for attendees to nibble on. Grape tomato with goat cheese.

Leonidas now also serves paninis made fresh in-store! Two types were brought out. This one is the honey walnut with goat cheese.

And the other was turkey, goat cheese, avocado and pesto. I can't decide which one I liked the most, they both tasted delicious!

Store co-owner Aisha gave us a run down of the history of their Leonidas store and introduced us to the amazing team, most of whom are family members!
