Baaa! If you visit Oakridge Centre this weekend, it'll be hard to miss the herd of 180 sheep currently residing in the West Galleria. The exhibit is a part of Lunarfest, which is celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Sheep on Feb 19, 2015. The sheep have sometimes been seen around Vancouver in the past weeks (my friend saw them at a playground in the evening) and will eventually make its way to in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery next week. They are pretty cute! People were taking photos of and with them. There's also a contest where you can win one! They will be at Oakridge until Sunday, so catch them while you can or you'll have to wait until next Friday to see them again!

Glenburn Soda was a place I've always wanted to go to. It's a cool 50s-style soda pop shoppe and photos of their ice creams and sundaes were so enticing! So finally, K and I planned a trip there last Sunday and took our parents along. It's funny because they commented on how nowadays the younger generation likes olden day things while the older generation likes more modern things. lol

Glenburn didn't open until 2pm on Sunday so we had lunch next door to wait. We came back at 2:15pm and the place was packed already!

There were so many options...I'll definitely have to come back again to try other things!

It's always time for ice cream at Glenburn. =D

Glenburn uses local ingredients, such as Birchwood Dairy and Avalon Dairy, to make their desserts and they also buy from other local businesses!

The parents thought the sundaes were too big for them so chose just to get a ice cream cone.

Dad had vanilla while mom tried the coffee crunch.

"I went all hot and cold"
It was still the hot chocolate festival so I decided to get Glenburn's version. It came with a cute vanilla ice cream cone on the rim of the cup!

"Black Out"
K tried "Black Out," a Glenburn original. It's chocolate syrup with chocolate ice cream topped chocolate whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, and a chocolate wafer. Chocolate overload! It was very good though!

They also sell cool vintage looking sodas and candies.

I really enjoyed our excursion to Glenburn and will be back in the future!

Glenburn Soda Fountain & Confectionery on Urbanspoon

Broken Rice is a Vietnamese restaurant on Hastings Street in Burnaby. We weren't really planning to have a meal there but we were waiting for Glenburn Soda to open next door so we had a second lunch there. The four of us just ordered a few appetizers to share. My parents have been here before and they liked it ,and from what I tasted, I liked it, too. The dishes tasted fresh and delicious. The service seemed a little slow though.  Next time, I'd like to try the Sizzling Saigon Crepe!

"I WENT ALL HOT AND COLD"
The fifth Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival is winding down! You have until February 14th, 2015 to try hot chocolate drinks from 24 locations made specially for this festival. I've been to a few locations, the latest being Glenburn Soda Fountain & Confectionery, which is serving a rich, dark hot chocolate made with Avalon Dairy milk with a mini Birchwood Dairy vanilla ice cream cone (above). So cute and delicious!

"MAROCCHINO"
I also tried the "Marocchino" at Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France. It is like a mocha but with drinking chocolate instead of milk so is much more rich. It is half drinking chocolate and half espresso. It is also served with a meringue flavour of your choice. You can chose half size or full size but I recommend half size because it is so rich!

"MADAGASCAR"
The first hot chocolate I had when the festival first started was the Madagascar at Thierry. It was $9 because it is made from a rare small plantation Ampamakia chocolate by Valrhona. It was served with a chocolate caramel. Thierry no longer serves this but has moved on to the "Dominican", which is probably also made from another special cocoa bean.

If you want to try any of these and more you better do it soon! Here is the list of places you can get hot chocolate from:

49th PARALLEL COFFEE ROASTERS + LUCKY'S DOUGHNUTS - New! (2 locations)
BEL CAFE
BELLA GELATERIA + TO DIE FOR BANANA BREAD
BUTTER BAKED GOODS - New!
CHEZ CHRISTOPHE - New!
CHOCOLATE ARTS
CHOCOLATERIE DE LA NOUVELLE FRANCE
DIVA AT THE MET - New!

SCHOKOLADE ARTISAN CHOCOLATE
SOIRETTE MACARONS & TEA
TERRA BREADS (3 locations)
THIERRY CHOCOLATERIE PATISSERIE CAFE
THOMAS HAAS (2 locations)
UVA WINE BAR + BITTERED SLING

I'm kind of interested in going to Mink Chocolates & Cafe. They are serving a hot chocolate topped with crickets! Yes, crickets! Weird, huh?

Cityfood Magazine is also hosting a contest where you can win a Grand Festival Prize consisting of gift certificates from all of our participating chocolate makers and cafes or a Festival Pass to the 2016 Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival! Get the details on their website! Good luck!

To create a completely immersive experience for the audience, the set design will encompass the space from the ice surface up through the air, drawing everyone into the story and closer to the characters.
