Evolution of Gaming Centre for Digital Media

Hosted by the Centre for Digital Media (CDM), Evolution of Gaming is a retrospective, interactive exhibit that celebrates the early history of video games. Please join us for a walk down memory lane as we look at how games have shaped our culture, defined a generation, and set the foundation for games to come. Featuring consoles, games and plenty of hands-on interactive exhibits to enjoy, Evolution of Gaming runs from Friday, August 1st to Sunday, August 10th, 2014.  There are three time slots available per day for the free public visits:  9 a.m. – 12 p.m. 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. 

Harmony Arts Festival

Harmony Arts Festival, presented by Odlum Brown Limited, takes place August 1-10, 2014  For more than two decades the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver has been one of the North Shore’s best loved community events. This festival is a celebration of music, performance, cinema and art that celebrates the best of the North Shore, regional and national performing, visual and culinary arts.  The Harmony Arts Festival continues to grow with more musical performances, new artist workshops, artsy kids studio, exhibitions of visual arts with a juried group show, upscale art market with over 80 tents, dance and drum performances, new food cart area, children’s art auction, free outdoor movies.

Davie Street Block Party - $10

Take back the streets for Pride Weekend in the heart of the Davie Village on Davie Street between Burrard and Jervis. With 2014, we have two community blocks centered on Bute Plaza with our all-ages stage and dance floor at the rainbow crosswalks, along with a variety of local artisans and carnival games hosted by LGBTQ community groups from around Vancouver. ASL interpreters will be available in the community blocks. As well, come visit our main stage in the 19+ zone between Burrard and Thurlow. Tickets are $10 for the 19+ zone and available at Little Sisters (1238 Davie St), Top Drawers (850 Davie St) and online at eventbrite!

Powell Street Festival Launch Concert - $8 /$10

Launch of the 38th annual Powell Street Festival on Friday night with a live performance from California-based band GRMLN and local band Late Spring. www.powellstreetfestival.com. GRMLN is the noise pop project of Kyoto-born Yoodoo Park, whose music incorporates the sunny feel of his Southern Californian upbringing with nostalgia for Japan.

VMO Live Symphony Performance

This is a FREE Concert, and seating is first come, first serve. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfort.  The VMO’s Summer Season begins with a very special free outdoor concert right in the heart of Coal Harbour downtown! With the beautiful scenery of the ocean and mountains, the VMO will be performing popular works that will make the evening an unforgettable one. The VMO is pleased and thankful to be partnering with PCI Developments in this wonderful collaboration.

The Minimalists Everything That Remains Tour

Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, better known to their 2 million readers as The Minimalists, are embarking on a 100-city international tour to share their story of living with less and to celebrate their new book, Everything That Remains.   At age 30, Joshua and Ryan left their six-figure corporate careers, got rid of most of their material possessions, and began living more deliberately. Come listen to them speak about their journey into the simple life, followed by a short reading from their new book, a brief Q&A session, and an optional book signing.     Free admission. 90-minute event. Come as you are. (You are welcome to pick up a copy of their new book, but you aren't required to purchase anything.)

Shorefest

SHOREFEST is now entering its 6th year as one of Vancouver’s largest, free community concert series.  Started in 2009 in conjunction with the Celebration of Light fireworks, SHOREFEST showcases some of Canada’s top musical acts in one of Vancouver’s most picturesque settings on the shores of English Bay. Over the course of 3 nights in the summer, hundreds of thousands of spectators gather at English Bay to enjoy the fireworks presentations while being entertained by acts on stages located on the Bathhouse Roof at English Bar and in the park at Sunset Beach.

Celebration of Light - Japan

The Celebration of Light is not only Vancouver's biggest event, but it's also the largest offshore fireworks competition in the world and attracts up to 400,000 spectators along English Bay each evening. Owned by the Not For Profit Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society.  Another year of exciting countries vying for the title at the Annual Honda Celebration of Light features: July 26  USA  July 30 France   August 2 Japan

The Vancouver Pride Parade was granted civic status last year in 2013 and is one of the city’s flagship events!  Attracting crowds of more than 650,000, the Pride Parade is renowned on the international stage as one of the largest and most successful LGBTQ events in the world. *Route: The parade begins at Robson Street and Thurlow Street, heads west to Denman Street, follows Denman to Pacific Street and Beach Avenue and finishes at Sunset Beach Pride Festival and Market.
