Earthwalk
1:00pm - 3:00pm
Meet at Leg-in-Boot Square, South False Creek north of Heather Street past Moberley Road near the water.
"Economics of Place and Time" False Creek Seawall with Michael Barkuksy. A walk on the False Creek seawall to look at the history of False Creek and how the natural capital of the water and shoreline has changed over the last 150 years. The route will go west along the seawall towards Granville Island.  Not long ago False Creek was a tidal inlet surrounded by old-growth forests and salmon streams. Since the settlers arrived in the late 19th century the area has gone through a great transformation. The "natural capital" - trees, fish, sealife - soon disappeared as its value was high on the industrial market. Then sawmills lined the shores as the timber was processed. Pollution filled the creek - reducing the value of the waters and killing even more sealife. When the sawmills ceased, gradually the toxic sediments settled and now the creek is lined with highrises full of "human capital"
