The Change-Up - Movie Review

Mitch Planko (Ryan Reynolds) and Dave Lockwood (Jason Bateman) are best buds but have completely opposite lives. Mitch is a single semi-unemployed bum and player who doesn't seem to have a care in the world while Dave is a overworked lawyer, husband and father of three. The grass is always greener on the other side as both envy the others' lives: Mitch thinks Dave has it all - a beautiful wife, children who love him and a high paying job while Dave longs for the freedom and stress-free life that Mitch seems to have. In one bizarre drunken night, they wake up to find that they have switched bodies! Now they must figure out a way to switch back while juggling each others' lives! The guys learn that it's not that easy to walk in the someone else's shoes.

Woo. R-rated for a reason. This movie is SO RAUNCHY! A lot of breasts shots, vulgar and offensive jokes and f-bombs abound. It is a super funny movie and there are genuinely funny moments but most of the jokes you'll find in this movie are low-brow humour.

As for the characters and actors, I think Jason Bateman is my favourite comedy actor. He was great in Horrible Bosses and he pulled off another great performance in this movie. Ryan Reynolds on the other hand...I hated his character and never warmed up to him. He was an ass and was still an ass in the end. Still I give Reynolds credit for making it believable of the switch. Olivia Wilde plays Sabrina McArdle, Dave's assistant at work. Her character does nothing but act pretty. She doesn't even seem to realize the two guys switched bodies when they are obviously different. But if you are only there for Olivia Wilde's boobs then by all means go see this movie. Personally, I kind of lost some respect for her - baring it all for two movies - first Cowboys and Aliens, now this.

Overall a really funny movie but relies heavily on shock value more than real jokes. If you like the Hangover or Hallpass type of movie then go for it!

The Change-Up is in theatres Friday August 5th, 2011.
